Katie's Story.

a story to tell...

Katie is a 16 year old girl receiving Home health services and is being treated for brain cancer. Her mother and father are divorced. She lives wither mother and 13 year old brother. Her father lives in Northern California. Her brain cancer is very aggressive and it is unlikely that she will survive the disease. Her mother has quit her job so that she can take care of Katie, and the family is living on limited resources. The car used for transport is not working properly and Katie’s mother cannot afford repairs of about five hundred dollars. The home health nurse has discussed other programs and options, with Katie and her family. However as long as they pursue aggressive treatment they do not have access to psychosocial and spiritual support.

Erin the home health social worker speaks with Katie’s mother who reports that Katie cries on a daily basis and also has become verbally abusive towards both herself and Katie’s brother. Katie’s mother begins to cry and asks, “Why has God done this to her? Erin is able to listen and suggest resources but the Home Health benefit does not allow for any further service or intervention. The emotional and financial strain seems to be too more than anyone should have to deal with. They feel like they are alone, and like there are no resources available.

Haven’s Heart can provide Katie and her family with a skilled professional to guide them to the resources and with solutions to the identified problems. Haven can provide financial aide and support to this family so that the car can be fixed, and so that Katie does not have to take the bus home with her mother after her chemotherapy treatments. Katie and her family should not be disqualified from receiving the emotional and financial support that they deserve during this difficult time.
